Hydrofluoric Acid Burns and Injuries

Hydrofluoric acid is a combination of hydrogen fluoride in water. It is a weak, comparatively speaking, acid. Unfortunately, as it is still an acid, hydrofluoric acid can still cause serious burns. Hydrofluoric acid is a valued source of fluorine which is important to many pharmaceuticals, like Prozac, and diverse plastics, like Teflon. Hydrofluoric acid is known best to the general public for its ability to dissolve glass by reacting to Silicon Dioxide which is a major component in most glasses.

Despite its relatively weak status on the acid scale, hydrofluoric acid is still an extremely hazardous liquid that is capable of causing damage to humans. It can cause severe skin and eye irritation in mild injuries. More serious injuries from hydrofluoric acid include deep-seated, slow-to-heal burns. In some of the most severe cases, exposure can be fatal to the person. Whenever a person is exposed to hydrofluoric acid, immediate paramedic assistance is necessary.

Hydrofluoric acid is particularly dangerous because it binds calcium. Calcium is a major component of the majority of the body's skin and other cells. This process occurs whenever HF makes contact with the body. A big difference between HF acid and other acids is the time it takes to neutralize the acid. The majority of acids are rapidly neutralized by the body's natural defenses and water in the body tissues. Unfortunately, HF takes a long time. It can take days for HF to become fully neutralized.

Because it takes so long for HF to be neutralized, tissue destruction can continue for days as well. As it binds calcium, it is even more dangerous. Calcium is necessary for all cell life and so when it is bound, it causes rapid cell death. When exposure is extensive, excessive amounts of calcium can be made in active. In addition, inadequate amounts of calcium will be made unavailable for vital body functions.

When treating an HF acid burn, it is important to tell the physician what the nature of the chemical involved in the exposure was. It is also helpful to provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to the doctor. These sheets will tell a doctor or nurse all of the relevant information concerning the acid or other chemical. Any lab using chemicals should have the MSDS sheets for all chemicals present in the lab.

When treating burns and other injuries from chemicals, it is very important to receive proper treatment for the burns. For more information on treating chemical burns and other ailments, please visit http://burnvictiminjurylawyers.com/burn_injury_lawyer_articles.aspx.
